Penultimate Day – Fox’s AT Thru Hike – Day 131 (2026)

On day 131 of my AT thru hike, I woke up early, worried about securing a campsite at the Birches. Despite my concerns, I arrived early and was the first in line, a pleasant surprise. The ranger shared an optimistic forecast for the following day, a welcome piece of news. After a quick stop at the camp store, I indulged in some junk food, saving my trail snacks for summit day. With only nine miles to hike, I spent the day chatting with fellow hikers, including Denver, Turbo, Poledancer, Medic, and an 80-year-old hiker named Tinker. The trail into Baxter State Park was uneventful, and I enjoyed getting to know Denver and his post-trail plans. The hike offered a unique perspective on life, shaping the experience of each hiker. I also encountered rafters navigating the rapids, a thrilling activity I've never tried. The trail itself became monotonous over time, and I focused more on the company and conversations than the scenery. We crossed two 'fords', which were actually rock hops due to the lack of rain, and hiked alongside rivers and waterfalls, including the aptly named 'Big Niagara Falls', which fell short of my expectations after visiting the real Niagara Falls. My day's menu included oatmeal, lemon, strawberry, chia, and almond, dal, almond, cherry, and chia, tuna, crackers, a turkey sub, a whoopie pie, a donut, chips, and ice cream. I'm grateful for the company of Snoopie and have managed to go 131 days without a ramen bomb. This journey is both the journey and the goal, and the outdoors provide a sense of comfort and sanctuary. The experience is shaped by the hikers' perspectives, and the trail itself becomes a backdrop to the human stories and connections formed along the way.
